It's not possible to fully explain Kaitiakitanga in words. However this is a brief explanation of what it means to Maori.
Kaitiakitanga means guardianship, protection, preservation or sheltering tangata whenua ( people of the land )
It's a way of managing the environment based on traditional Maori world view. The connection between people and nature. So people and nature are not seperate instead, people are part of the natural world.
FOR US THIS MEANS:
We have the responsibility to minimise impact on the environment. We all need to take care of the environment especially when camping : protecting vegetation and avoid polluting waterways.
We live, work and play in the outdoors and we need to develop a deeper level of care for the environment that we enjoy, so that our children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy it too in years to come.
